Of inordinate desires
terça-feira, 4 de setembro de 2012
Whenever a man desires anything inordinately he is soon disturbed in himself.
The proud and greedy man can never rest. The poor and the humble in spirit are blessed with sublime peace.
The man who is not at peace with himself is easily tempted and overcome by small and trivial things.
He who is weak in spirit and inclined to carnal and sensual thoughts cannot easily free himself from earthly desires. Whenever he does he regrets it; and when any man opposes him he is angry.
If he obtains his desires he becomes conscience stricken because he gave in to his passions. But this will not help him gain true peace. It is in resisting the passions and not giving in to them that we attain peace of heart.
There is no peace in the lustful man or in him that is given to earthly desires; but there is peace in the heart of the humble and spiritual man.
